A question that comes up often in the MG community and among panel shops is whether body panels can be swapped between MG models. It's a reasonable thing to wonder — MG Motor produces several vehicles that look visually similar, and parts availability varies across the range. The short answer: no, body panels are not interchangeable between the MG3, MG ZS, and MG HS. Here's why, and what to do if parts are hard to find for your model.
Different Platforms, Different Panels
The MG3, MG ZS, and MG HS are built on different platforms with different wheelbases, track widths, and body structures. The MG3 is a compact hatchback. The MG ZS is a small SUV riding higher with a wider stance. The MG HS is a mid-size SUV with a longer wheelbase and taller profile. Despite sharing the MG badge and some design language (the MG shield grille, swept headlamp signatures), none of the external body panels — bumpers, guards, bonnets, headlamps, tail lamps — are shared between these models.
What About Parts from the Same Model, Different Years?
Within the same model, parts compatibility between years depends on whether a facelift was introduced. For the MG ZS, the 2021 facelift brought an entirely new front end — the bumper bar, headlamps, grille, and front guards are all different to the pre-facelift 2017–2020 model. The rear end is more similar but not identical. For the MG HS, similar changes occurred at the 2021 facelift. For the MG3, there have been multiple updates to the front end across different production years.
MG3 Parts Compatibility
The MG3 hatchback sold in Australia has been updated several times since it launched. Key variants are the pre-2018 model and the 2018+ refresh. Bumper bars, front guards, and front headlamps differ between these variants. The MG3 Excite, Core, and Style grades share the same exterior panels within the same model year, but they are not interchangeable with other MG models.
MG ZS Parts Compatibility Within the ZS Range
The 2021+ facelift MG ZS introduced a restyled front and rear. The Essence, Excite, and Core grades of the facelift share the same exterior panels. The EV variant also shares bodywork with the ICE ZS for most panels. However, the ZS EV has slightly different front bumper apertures on some variants — always confirm by model and year when ordering.
MG HS Parts Compatibility Within the HS Range
The MG HS Essence and Excite share the same exterior body panels. The PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid) variant uses the same body panels as the standard HS for most external components, with differences mainly limited to the rear charging port area. The 2021+ facelift introduced a new front end — the bumper, headlamps, and grille from pre-facelift models will not fit the updated vehicle.
What to Do When Parts Are Hard to Source
If parts for your specific MG model are temporarily out of stock, don't assume a part from another MG model will work — it won't. Instead, contact your parts supplier to get on a restock notification list, or ask about expected arrival dates. MG Parts Australia holds stock of the most commonly replaced panels for the MG3, MG ZS, and MG HS from our Melbourne warehouse. If a part you need isn't listed, contact us — we may be able to source it.
